Senior Production Designer - Film & Television

Our client is seeking a highly creative and experienced Senior Production Designer to join their dynamic team in Charlotte, North Carolina, US . This role is integral to bringing visual concepts for film and television projects to life, establishing the look and feel of sets, props, and overall aesthetic. The Senior Production Designer will lead the art department, overseeing all aspects of visual design from pre-production through to principal photography. You will be responsible for interpreting scripts, collaborating with directors and producers to define the visual style, and translating concepts into tangible environments. Key responsibilities include creating mood boards, concept sketches, storyboards, and detailed renderings; managing the art department budget; sourcing and fabricating set elements; and supervising set decorators, prop masters, and construction crews. The ideal candidate possesses a strong portfolio showcasing a diverse range of projects and a deep understanding of historical periods, architectural styles, and artistic movements. This on-site role requires exceptional leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple complex tasks under tight deadlines. You must be adept at problem-solving, resourceful in sourcing materials, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with a wide range of creative and technical personnel. Responsibilities: Lead the art department in developing and executing the overall visual design of film and television projects. Collaborate with directors and producers to conceptualize and define the aesthetic and mood of productions. Translate scripts and story ideas into visual elements, including set design, props, and color palettes. Create concept art, sketches, storyboards, and detailed design renderings. Manage and adhere to the art department budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness. Oversee the construction, decoration, and dressing of sets. Source, design, and fabricate necessary props and set elements. Supervise and guide the work of art department staff, including set decorators, prop masters, and construction crews. Ensure all design elements are period-accurate and consistent with the project's established style. Liaise with other departments, including cinematography, wardrobe, and visual effects, to ensure cohesive visual storytelling. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Production Design, Architecture, or a related field. Extensive portfolio demonstrating successful production design work in film and/or television. Minimum of 7 years of experience in production design or art direction. Strong understanding of design principles, art history, architectural styles, and visual storytelling techniques. Proficiency in design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite) is highly desirable. Excellent leadership, project management, and budgeting skills. Exceptional creativity, artistic vision, and attention to detail. Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Experience in managing and motivating a diverse creative team.
