SYNOPSIS
The Fifth Step is a gripping, subversively funny, psychological drama that explores the complex, volatile relationship between two men navigating addiction, vulnerability, and toxic dynamics. After years in the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, James wants to become a sponsor to newcomer Luka. The pair bond over black coffee, trade stories and build a fragile friendship out of their shared experiences. But as Luka approaches step five – the moment of confession – dangerous truths emerge, threatening the trust on which both of their recoveries depend.
ROLES & ACCENTS
We encourage actors of all identities and backgrounds to audition
Luka: Male, 20s. A young, raw, and newly sober alcoholic, Luka is physically restless, emotionally transparent, deeply anxious, and lonely. He carries a heavy burden of self-loathing mixed with a desperate hunger for genuine human connection.
Accent:: Ideally a Scottish accent but could work with any working-class British accent.
James: Male 50s. A veteran AA member who has been sober for 25 years and wants to become Luka’s sponsor. On the surface highly composed, rational, authoritative, and patiently altruistic but is revealed to be brittle and self-deceived.
Accent: More educated and middle class but could be from any part of Britain.
