Elderly Creole man with deep brown skin, silver hair, and proud bearing even in illness. Tall but stooped. Kind eyes that carry wisdom and sorrow. Weathered hands from years of farming. Speaks with a thick Louisiana accent mixing English, French, and Creole. Fifth-generation owner of the family orange orchard. Built the business from his father's legacy. Raised Eva and Sophia with his late wife. Carries guilt about not protecting Eva from his brother; the stroke was partially brought on by stress over Eva's situation. His illness brings Eva home and his recovery parallels Eva's healing.
