Film Teacher-Part-Time

Ssdsboston Tallahassee, Florida $75–$150 an hour

Schechter Boston is opening a new STEAM Center, and we're looking for a creative, technically skilled filmmaker or media educator to help students in grades 3–5 and middle school explore storytelling, filmmaking, and digital media.

We're looking for someone who loves film, enjoys collaborating with others, and is excited to help students bring their ideas to life on screen. This is an opportunity to share your craft, inspire young storytellers, and help students discover their voices through the art of filmmaking.

Position Overview

The Film Teacher will lead small-group classes and workshops that introduce students to the filmmaking process, from developing an idea and writing a story to shooting, editing, and screening a finished film. The ideal candidate brings hands‐on filmmaking experience, a passion for creative collaboration, and the ability to guide students through engaging, age‐appropriate projects.

Schedule: One afternoon per week, with the possibility of two afternoons for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

Teach the filmmaking process: Guide students through storytelling, scriptwriting, storyboarding, filming, sound recording, editing, and screening.

Develop creative workshops: Lead short, hands‐on workshops in areas such as stop‐motion animation, documentary interviews, sound design, and special effects.

Facilitate project‐based learning: Design longer filmmaking projects that allow students to develop their ideas, work through the creative process, and present completed films at a screening or premiere.

Encourage collaboration: Help students work as a production team, rotating through roles such as director, camera operator, sound designer, actor, and editor.

Build technical skills: Introduce students to cameras, tablets, computers, editing software, and other filmmaking tools.

Support creative problem‐solving: Encourage students to experiment, take creative risks, learn from mistakes, and find solutions to challenges throughout production.

Create a supportive learning environment: Help students develop confidence, communicate their ideas, and appreciate different perspectives and creative approaches.

Collaborate on curriculum: Help shape engaging projects that connect filmmaking, technology, storytelling, and design thinking.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring:

Experience as a filmmaker, video editor, videographer, animator, media educator, or other creative professional working in film and digital media.

Familiarity with cameras, recording equipment, and video editing software.

An understanding of the filmmaking process, including visual storytelling, composition, sound, and editing.

A passion for working with children and helping them develop creative and technical skills.

The ability to break complex projects into manageable, engaging steps for students of different ages and abilities.

Strong organizational and communication skills, along with a warm, patient, and encouraging approach.

A commitment to creating an inclusive environment where students feel comfortable sharing ideas, experimenting, and learning together.

Teaching experience is a plus, but it is not required. We welcome filmmakers and media professionals who are excited to bring their expertise into an educational setting.

What We Offer

Dedicated studio space and filmmaking equipment.

Small‐group instruction and the opportunity to work closely with students.

A flexible schedule designed around your afternoon availability.

Creative freedom to develop curriculum and build a filmmaking program.

Opportunities for students to showcase their work through end‐of‐term film screenings or festivals for families and the school community.

A collaborative, supportive school community that values creativity, experimentation, and continuous learning.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be $75-$150/hour for classes. Workshops and Assistant Teachers $100+/hour.
